Which Is Better: WD-40 Or 3-In-One Oil?

Two Useful Products With Different Purposes

You may have had an argument about what fluid to apply to a squeaky door hinge or rusted bicycle chain. Do you use WD-40 or a lubricating oil like 3-in-One? Let’s examine the differences between these two useful household products so you can get the most out of them.

3-In-One Oil

This lightweight oil has been around since 1894 as a go-to oil for smaller household items and tools. It’s a blend of mineral oil and other lubricating ingredients. It's ideal for lubricating, cleaning out dirt from between moving parts, and protecting against rust. In fact, those three functions (lubricate, clean, and protect) are the origin of its name. It doesn’t get much simpler than that!

WD-40

WD-40 was invented in 1953 to protect against corrosion on advanced aerospace components. WD stands for “water displacement”, and the 40 means “40th formula”. Over the decades it’s become a standard product in garages for its ability to remove moisture and break down rust. Many people also use it as a lubricant, which is likely where confusion arises about which fluid is better. But which fluid you use will depend on the situation and what you want to do.

When Moving Parts Aren’t Moving

WD-40 is most useful when you have rusted or seized up parts. A rusted bicycle chain is a classic situation where WD-40 is your friend. As a solvent it will not only break down rust, but all kinds of other dirt and grease as well. This principle also applies for stuck metal fasteners, although it’s not always guaranteed to loosen badly rusted automotive bolts. The important thing to remember about WD-40 is that while it lubricates parts for a brief period, you'll want something longer-acting for lubrication. That's where 3-in-One comes in.

Keeping Things Moving Smoothly And Quietly

When rust isn’t present but components are squeaking or otherwise not working properly, a shot of 3-in-One oil is your best bet. The best thing about 3-in-One oil is that it stays coated on the part to offer long-term protection and also can be used to clean out dirt and grease as well.

The Best Of Both Worlds

If you want to get the most out of both products, you may want to give the parts a thorough clean using WD-40 first, and then come back later and apply some 3-in-One oil for some lasting protection against rust and dirt.

Other Considerations

Keep in mind that although WD-40 is safe for wood and plastic surfaces in addition to metal, it is quite toxic and flammable when it's being sprayed, so target the spray carefully. The aerosol cans come with a small straw that fits in a notch across the cap so it won’t get lost. Store both items in a cool dry place away from any sources of major temperature change.
