How To Break Up With Someone

The Hard Part

For all the time and effort it takes to find the right person, the most challenging part of dating is making a smooth exit out of the relationship if things aren't going well. The more time you’ve spent with someone, the harder it is to end things if the relationship has gone south. We share some basic advice to help you break things off in the easiest way possible.

It Shouldn't Come As A Shock

Most breakups won’t come as a shock to the other person. If you feel the relationship is not going anywhere, chances are your partner realizes it as well. However, it’s still important to make sure you’ve discussed the problems you’re having in advance so that the breakup doesn’t come as a complete shock.

A Face-To-Face Meeting

Even with all the communication devices available today, we still recommend the old-fashioned face-to-face meeting to break up with someone. A text message or phone conversation to break things off conveys the terrible message to the other person that the relationship wasn’t important enough for you to meet in person to end things. With this in mind, try to choose an appropriate location for the meeting.

Pick A Proper Meeting Spot

If the two of you have spent a lot of time together the other person will want the opportunity to share their feelings. The potential exists for a drawn-out emotional confrontation. Try to choose a quiet setting at a park or at home for a meeting like this. If you only went on a few dates, a small café should be okay for the final meet.

A Fine Balance

You have to be honest with the other person about why you think things aren’t working out, and that you really are done with the relationship. On the other hand, you also have to try to preserve the other person’s dignity. Being dumped hurts, but if you do it tactfully, the other person will have a chance to move on without lingering resentments. This is very important if there’s the possibility that the two of you may cross paths in the future.

If You’re The One Being Dumped

If you’re the one being broken up with, try to handle the situation with as much grace as you can. Arguing or trying to persuade the other person to change their mind will only diminish their opinion of you. Don’t get mad or bring up past things the other person did. Look to the future, not the past. With time you’ll appreciate that the other person was sincere and honest with you and took the time and effort to break up with you properly.

Don’t Ghost

Unfortunately, there are still many people who don’t take the time to communicate their problems or break things off respectfully. Ceasing all communication—ghosting— is the worst thing you can do, as it makes the other person feel absolutely awful. They also never get the chance to hear what went wrong so they can improve themselves in the future. Never do this.

Single Again

Now that you’re single again, there are some habits you can practice to put the breakup behind you. Try not to speak negatively about your ex when you’re with friends and family. Avoid contacting him/her or looking at their social media feeds. This only prolongs the process even more. If you’ve handled the breakup properly, you’ll be in a good place to move on with your life and meet someone new.
