Finding The Best Mattress To Avoid Back Pain And Sleepless Nights

Getting It Right The First Time

Mattresses are one of those items that many people don’t give much thought to until it comes time to get a new one. Since humans spend a third of our lives sleeping, it’s critical to choose the one best suited to you. We share some key things to keep in mind when shopping for a new mattress.

Sleeping Position And Mattress Firmness

Consider what position you sleep in. If you sleep on your stomach, the mattress should be medium-firm to prevent you from sinking down and straining your back and joints. Side sleepers are usually recommended to choose medium to medium-soft, as the give allows a bigger surface of the mattress to support the hips and shoulders. Back sleepers generally should go with something firmer.

Springs

How the mattress is constructed will determine how comfortable—and expensive—it is. Innerspring mattresses are cheaper than the other kinds, but you get what you pay for; if you’re bouncing around every time your partner turns over, chances are you’re on an innerspring. Pocket coil mattresses are better, as the springs are kept in separate pockets to provide proper support and movement isolation. You’ll pay more for one, though.

Foam

Foam offers movement isolation on a softer surface, making them best suited for couples and those who sleep on their side. Latex foam is a common option for support and durability; those made of 100% natural materials have been well-reviewed. Memory foam is another popular option as it conforms to the body’s shape and gives great support to those with back issues.

The Right Combination

Many of the best-quality mattresses today are hybrids that combine a sturdy spring system with layers of foam. Laying a three-inch foam topper on top of a spring mattress is another popular option that makes use of this principle.

Take Your Time And Don’t Overthink It

Materials and construction are important, but don’t get too technical when shopping for a new mattress. The most important thing is that it lets you get a good night’s sleep without leaving you with a sore back. Don’t be shy about lying on mattresses right in the store for several minutes if necessary. Retailers usually offer trial periods for new mattresses; make full use of these offers. When you wake up fully rested, you’ll know you chose the right mattress.
