We examine the signs of the zodiac and which signs attract—and repel—each other most!
Elements
The twelve signs of the zodiac are each ruled by one of the four elements: earth, air, fire, and water. Let’s look at the signs in sequence with their guiding elements in turn to probe some possible common ground.

Earth Sign: Taurus
As the name suggests, people born under the earth signs tend to be grounded and practical. Taurus people may find a lot in common with each other and with water signs like Pisces and Cancer. Less compatible signs may include the more spontaneous Gemini or the impulsive Sagittarius.
Earth Sign: Virgo
Virgo people are known for their good communication skills and attention to detail. They get along well with other earth signs as well as the water signs Cancer and Scorpio. They don't get along so well with those who don’t stress the small things, like Sagittarius or Gemini.
Earth Sign: Capricorn
Driven and forward-looking, Capricorns tend to go together best with other earth signs and intense Scorpios. They may clash with more emotional Cancers or the mercurial Aries temperament.
Air Sign: Gemini
The air signs are Libra, Gemini, and Aquarius. People of these signs tend to be outgoing and social, with perhaps even a humanitarian streak. Gemini people are witty and spontaneous, hitting it off with dynamic Aries or Sagittarius but having a tougher go of it with emotional Cancerians or Pisces folks.
Air Sign: Libra
Libra people usually have a strongly developed esthetic sense and good taste in the finer things of life. They tend to help others find common ground with each other. Libra may find balance with outgoing Leos but clash with headstrong Aries.
Air Sign: Aquarius
Aquarians thrive on having a mind of their own and seeking an independent path in life. As a result Aquarius people may find a kindred spirit with Aries or Sagittarius, but be less successful with earthy Taurus, and the intense, strong-willed personality of a Scorpio.
Fire Sign: Aries
The people of the fire signs are Aries, Sagittarius, and Leo. They may generate a spark with anyone! Aries have strong personalities, and though they can be quite likable they are most likely to jell with outgoing Geminis and Aquarius, while fizzling with emotional water signs or the stable Libra.
Fire Sign: Leo
Outward-looking Leo pairs well with other fire signs as well as the sociable Gemini and the sophisticated Libra. They don’t go so well with individualistic Aquarius or intense Scorpios.
Fire Sign: Sagittarius
Sagittarians have a great curiosity about the world, and can be quite unfiltered in their opinions, which they don’t always hesitate to express! They get along famously with the other fire signs, and go well with sociable Libras as well as opinionated Aquarius. They don't go so well with detail-oriented Virgos or emotional water signs like Pisces or Cancer.
Water Sign: Cancer
The water signs are Cancer, Pisces, and Scorpio. Cancers tend to be quite sentimental and emotional while looking out for others. Their best pairings are with home-loving Taurus and sensitive Virgo. Cancers usually don’t pair well with combative Aries and the relaxed, clear-headed Libra.
Water Sign: Pisces
Pisces are usually very compassionate and intuitive of others’ emotions. They only expect to have to explain things once, though! They pair best with creature comfort-loving Taurus and the highly motivated Capricorn. The more analytical Virgo, or the fast-thinking talkative Gemini may not be such a great match.
Water Sign: Scorpio
Scorpios tend to be intense with a passionate desire for an emotional connection. Their best pairing is with thoughtful Virgos and driven Capricorns; their worst pairing is with hyper-rational Taurus and proud Leos.
Is It Written In The Stars?
While zodiac signs offer a rough guide to different personality types, there are infinite possibilities just as there are infinite numbers of stars up in the sky. Remember that no one zodiac sign is superior to any other; they all have their good features and faults. Don’t be afraid to test the odds if you’re interested in someone who has a sign that’s not very compatible with yours. After all as the saying goes, opposites attract!
